Excerpts from
"When We Get Straight"
One day Tesmae came home from playing
outside. There was the smell of alcohol and smoke in the house. Dad
had fallen asleep on the sofa. Mama was pouring herself another drink.
"Mama," Tesmae said softly, "When can I go to church?"
There was a cloud of smoke circling above Mama's head. Mama took a
sip from her drink before answering, "Tesmae, I will take you to church
when we get straight! Now go back outside and leave me alone."
Tesmae did not understand what her mother meant by getting straight.
Tesmae hoped that her parents would get straight soon because she
wanted to go to church. |

Tesmae went to
Sunday School where she learned about Jesus, what it meant to be a
Christian, and the importance of prayer.
"God bless Mama and Daddy," she said. "Lord, Mama said she and Daddy
would come to church when they got straight. Please make them straight,
in Jesus' name. Amen."
Tesmae loved to read her Children's Bible, she read it every chance
she got. The more she read the better her reading became. |
