The King of England near what is now Bush Gardens, Virginia, gave an English man named John Doswell a land grant. (The map of Virginia lists Doswell, Virginia, it is believed to be in that area of the state.) John Doswell Sr. willed his property and his slaves to his son, John Doswell, Jr. One of those slaves was my paternal foremother, Polly Doswell. I do not know which country in Africa her family came from. Our family tree starts with her.

Tom Fowlkes was the landowner in what is believed to be the Rehoboth or Blackstone area of Virginia. He gave Cellie, a slave her freedom.
